Release: Version 2.0
Launch date: September 1st, 2026

Almost exactly two years since launching 1.0, the new 2.0 is a very big release with important functional and paywall changes.

  1. Basic use for framing images and adding backgrounds and lighting is now completely free for all with NO watermark. The watermarking and limitations now apply only to Batch Mode, batch intents in Shortcuts, Custom Frames and Custom Background Images, a small watermark on Magic Import images and changing the app icon on iOS. We never charge for the Apple device frames.
  2. Two whole new “apps” added inside - Privacy Redactions, and Magic Import for generating images from text or links.
  3. In-app Batch mode allows you to batch process hundreds of images at once and export them in a single step, with a new sidebar to show the input images. We worked hard to make sure this doesn’t get in the way of the common case of non-batch usage.
  4. New native Mac app replaces the old Mac Catalyst app. A side effect of this also brings us multi-window support on Mac and iPad.

Some new workflows enabled by these new features:

  • Frame multiple screenshots in a batch with redactions, using the “automatic” naming policy to make their names consistent, then drag and drop them into a blog post/CMS.
  • Redact any images (not just screenshots) as a batch from Photos using “Share” in Photos.
  • Create multi-image carousels in batch mode with a combination of text and social post links, then share the batch into the Instagram app.
  • Use the new “Shareshot from Clipboard” control widget on macOS or iOS to instantly open the app with the contents of the clipboard, whether text or image.
  • Drop many source code files into the app and then drag the syntax highlighted images out into a presentation app like iA Presenter or Keynote.

Privacy Redactions

We’ve added 100% free support for redacting private information to protect people from doxxing themselves or others when sharing. We use Apple’s on-device Vision framework to find and categorise data such as Names, Dates, Faces, Financial information, QR codes and Trigger Phrases.

The privacy UI on iPhone The privacy UI on Mac

A tappable interface toggles redaction of individual items in the image — no fiddling with swiping over tiny text in the image. The app remembers your preference, so when you redact your own name or passport number, it will automatically redact it next time it is found in any image. Hiding a term hides all occurrences of it in that image.

We always automatically redact previously unseen “identifying information” by default e.g. names and e-mails. In addition we always redact financial information such as card numbers + expiry dates, IBAN codes and so on. You always have to un-redact these explicitly — and unlike other data, un-redacting them once won’t make the app un-redact them automatically next time.”

Faces can be set to always redact by default, in case you want to assume faces should not be included in shared images unless explicitly un-redacted.

The UI warns you if you have some discovered private information that needs to be checked before you share.

👉 No system can reliably detect all data automatically, so redactions are never applied when using Shortcut intents because we do not believe automated processes for detecting private information can be trusted enough without human review!

Magic Import

Sometimes you don’t even need to take a screenshot! You can now import, drag and drop and paste text, text files and links. An image is generated from the text ready for sharing. No need to screenshot and crop social posts or Notes just to share them on Instagram!

Importing a podcast URL Importing a podcast URL Importing a podcast URL

This includes special treatment for:

  • Plain text & Rich Text
  • Markdown
  • Source Code (Swift, JavaScript, and so on)
  • Links to social media posts on BlueSky, Mastodon and Twitter
  • Links to podcast episodes or feeds (Apple Podcasts or most RSS based sites)
  • Links to Apple Music albums or songs, Apple Maps locations, App Store apps.
  • App Store Connect custom review text (shared from Apple’s “Connect” app)

The rich renderings produced for these formats have different options based on the content type, and those with links support adding the text of the URL and/or a QR code to the image, perfect for use in image-based social posts or presentation slides.

Batch Mode

We’ve always supported batch processing with Shortcuts intents but most people simply don’t work that way.

Batch Mode

So we added batch processing right in the main UI of the app on all platforms. You can Import/Paste/Drop dozens of images into the same session, set the common style properties across all of them and then tailor per-image settings like device frame colour, corner radius and text settings.

Even privacy redactions are supported individually on every image. When you’re ready tap the export button or just drag and drop the entire stack out in one action.

The batch naming policy allows you to supply a single name with auto-numbering of each output file, or keep the original filenames if you imported or dropped files in.

New macOS app

We have got rid of macOS Catalyst and the new app plays better with macOS. We put a lot of work into the system integration aspects of this around Copy/Paste, Drag and Drop and menus.

We also added the Control Widgets to macOS so you can add them to the menu bar or Control Center to instantly frame your latest screenshot or what is on the clipboard.

As part of this work, the iPad and Mac versions now both have standard sidebar and inspectors. A side effect of these changes means the macOS version baseline is now 26.0.

Updated Shortcut Intents

We added several new shortcut intents to support the new Magic Import features for creating images from Text and Links.

This opens up endless possibilities for automating the generation of images from markdown text such as customer reviews, marketing text carousels or your app’s latest release notes.

Hundreds of Updates & Improvements

Too many to mention, but the list includes:

  • Massive rendering performance and UI performance improvements.
  • More backgrounds support rotation angles.
  • The Share extension now just prepares items for use in the app, eliminating the low memory crash problems that affected it in the past.
  • Improvements to the custom output sizes UI.

The full release notes for 2.0 are available here.

iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS 26.0, visionOS 1.0 or higher are required.

If you have any questions about the new features please drop me a line.

Product Highlights

Here are some things the app can do that we’re particularly pleased with:

  • Smart Frame Selection handles the case where multiple devices have the same screenshot resolution. It will try to get it right for you based on the device you are using and other information — and if not you can just switch to one of the other frames. All the frame options shown are guaranteed to fit that screenshot perfectly. You also have the option of no frame being applied at all.
  • Auto Import of new screenshots if you have granted Photos access or access to your Screenshots folder on Mac. Just snap away, return to the app and you’ll be prompted to switch to the new screenshot if you already had one open, or it will just auto-open it — keeping all your previous styling settings. If you start the app from fresh and there’s a recent screenshot, it’ll dive right in to framing it.
  • Deep Apple Platform support means the app can run on all Apple’s platforms that make sense: iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro. We adapted the UI for each platform individually to make the most of what each platform has to offer.
  • Dozens of background styles from a blurred version of the screenshot to solid colours, custom images and dozens of gradient backgrounds, stripe patterns and solidarity flags. Most backgrounds also support “tweaks” so you can shift the colour, saturation and brightness of the background to suit your content with our simplified controls. Some support adjusting the angle too.
  • Custom Frames are very easy to use. Just drop an image that has a transparent “hole” in it covering the center of the image, and you can use it as a frame for anything that exactly fits the pixel dimensions of the hole. No masking, no hassles, no sharp screenshot corners poking out behind the frame, no hairline gaps, no aspect ratio distortion. Our “Magic Mask” engine does it all for you. It works with any images, not just screenshots.
  • Shortcuts support is very rich, allowing you to create all kinds of workflows to e.g. create a new note containing some text, screenshot that then frame it with a given background and then share it. Or create a custom background image using your Apple Music “now playing” album art, frame your last screenshot over it and share that.
  • Settings memory remembers all the style settings you last used, so repeated framing with a consistent look takes no time at all. Frame memory remembers which frame variant you last used for each device model too!

Origin Story

The whole impetus for creating this app was a toot on Mastodon from someone Marc follows, sharing a screenshot using another framing app. We tried the app and found it nice but lacking in areas important to us, and couldn’t find others that had the approach we had in mind.

…and yes, we often mistype it as Shareshit but, well, that also works. 🤷‍♂️
