We’re so pleased to announce our new app, Shareshot! We’re a two-person indie app development team and you may remember us from our previous app, Captionista. If you need anything that isn’t here please contact me.
Get the TestFlight Beta to try it out now.
There are a few apps like this and of course Federico’s shortcuts, so why make this? Well, the devil’s always in the details. We wanted a framing solution for ourselves that was fast, automatable for batch processing with Shortcuts, pixel perfect and that only used correctly fitting frames… with the option of adding beautiful backgrounds to help with marketing or presenting apps.
What’s more, we didn’t want to be stuck waiting for app developers (like us) to add new device frames or be limited to the ones they provided. So supporting custom frames was a hard requirement as was including all Apple-provided frames that they publish. Portrait, landscape, colour variations, everything from iPhone to iPad and Apple Watch to Macs… even Apple TV.
(P.S. we also love and used Federico’s shortcut for years, they are the epitome of Shortcuts engineering. A true marvel to behold!)
We’ve received some nice reviews already:
“One of the things I liked most about Shareshot is that it’s very intuitive.” — 9to5Mac
“If you’re a developer, designer, or marketer, or if you you find yourself regularly using screenshots for any other purpose, I highly recommend adding Shareshot to your app toolbox.” — MacStories
And we have users that love it…
“Trying out Shareshot with some Söka 2.0 screenshots and WOW, this is a match made in heaven!” — Roddy Munro (Söka)
“All my recent screenshots are made with Shareshot. This app is so good, and so many things are done right…” — Thomas Ricouard (Ice Cubes)
“This is amazing! I’ve been looking for something like this for a long time. I love the editing options in-app.” — Lukas Petr (Timelines)
“Oooh, Shareshot looks really nice for us iOS devs that want to share what they’re building” — Angelo Stavrow (Dropped Bits)

This update release adds some great new features:

- Framing new iPhone 16 models with all the new device colour variants and bonus backgrounds for some specific frame variations to make the frame colours pop.
- Framing new Apple Watch Series 10 alongside more frame variations for Apple Watch Ultra and Ultra 2.
- Gaming frame for Nintendo Switch and playdate.
- Apple Music Background which will use your “now playing” are from the Music app as a background, with blur options to add more variation to your shared screenshots.
iOS 17, iPadOS 17 and VisionOS 1.0 or higher are required.
The full release notes for 1.1.2 are available here.
Product Highlights
Here’s some things we’re particularly pleased with:
- Smart Frame Selection handles the case where multiple devices have the same screenshot resolution. It will try to get it right for you based on the device you are using and other heuristics — and if not you can just switch to one of the other frames. All the frame options shown are guaranteed to fit that screenshot.
- Auto Import of new screenshots if you have granted Photos access. Just snap away, return to the app and you’ll be prompted to switch to the new screenshot — keeping all your existing styling settings. If you start the app from fresh and there’s a recent screenshot, it’ll dive right in to framing it.
- Output Styles include Portrait, Square, Landscape and “Fit Frame” for professionals that just need framed images over transparency for content or processing in other applications.
- Custom Frames are very easy to use. Just drop an image that has a transparent “hole” in it covering the center of the image, and you can use it as a frame for anything that exactly fits the pixel dimensions of the hole. No masking, no hassles, no sharp screenshot corners poking out behind the frame, no hairline gaps, no aspect ratio distortion. Our “Magic Mask” feature does it all for you. It doesn’t have to be screenshots…
- Shortcuts support is very rich, allowing you to create all kinds of workflows to e.g. create a new note containing some text, screenshot that then frame it with a given background and then share it. Or create a custom background image using your Apple Music “now playing” album art, frame your last screenshot over it and share that.
- Settings memory remembers all the style settings you last used, so repeated framing with a consistent look takes no time at all.
View the full feature list here.
Some known limitations we’ll be addressing post launch…
- iPhone 13 Mini screenshots will not be recognised correctly at the moment.
- iPad screenshots using alternative resolutions are not recognised.
- We didn’t bundle Watch frames older than Series 7 in the app, but if needed they can be dropped in from Apple’s DMGs. See Frames.
Vision Pro
We put in the effort to make a native Vision Pro app. There’s plenty we want to improve over time but there’s something great about being able to do some real work on Vision Pro.
We particularly like taking screenshots directly on Vision Pro or from Photos and quickly dressing them up in Shareshot and then sharing them via Messages to colleagues who don’t have Vision Pro — and who can’t see what you’re doing even if they’re in the same office! They’re often amazed at how quickly you can get things done like this.
We’d love to hear your thoughts on this and your workflows.

Origin Story
The whole impetus for creating this app was a toot on Mastodon from someone Marc follows, sharing a screenshot using another framing app. We tried the app and found it nice but lacking in areas important to us, and couldn’t find others that had the approach we had in mind.
So… we spent a year of our spare time making our own, as you do. Since going through that process we now have a surprisingly long list of cool things we plan to add to really take it beyond just adding a frame and background to screenshots.
Yes we framed the screenshots in here using it. It’s one of our prime motivations for making it!
…and yes, we often mistype it as Shareshit but, well, that also works. 🤷♂️
